Chapter Nine

The mixer whirred, while I piped a row of delicate rosettes onto a vanilla bean cake. Asher ran the cashier, and Aunt Luna was in her usual spot by the oven, her silver hair defying gravity in its bun as she hummed to the tune of an oldies song playing softly from the radio.

I waited for the line of customers to finish before giving him the news. "So, you’ll never believe what Henry got a call about last night," I said, holding the piping bag. "Apparently, the mayor’s secretary jumped out of a window."

Asher leaned a hip against the counter and folded his arms over his chest. "You mean, like, on purpose?"

"Madison told me something last night that leads me to believe there might be more to it.” I glanced around to make sure Aunt Luna was still preoccupied before leaning in closer. “She thinks the mayor had something to do with her brother’s death."

"The mayor?" he whispered back, his eyes wide as cinnamon rolls. "That seems like a stretch."

"Yeah, I agree. Still, she said her brother had been running attack ads against the mayor recently, now that he’s up for re-election." I finished off the cake with a flourish.

Asher smirked. “So naturally, you want to go hunt him down and talk to him.”

“The hunting part should be easy. He’s the mayor. We’ll just go to his office. We'll just pop in, casual-like, and see what we can find out. You in?"

"Is he in?” Dori said from beside me, almost appearing out of nowhere. For the past few hours, he’d been asleep in his favorite cabinet. “This is Asher we’re talking about.”

Asher chuckled. “Yeah. What the cat said.”

“What the cat said?” asked a customer, who also seemed to appear out of nowhere. “Is that an expression?”

Asher and I exchanged glances. “Uh, yeah,” he said. “A dumb family expression.”

“For what?” she asked.

Asher hesitated while he thought of a good lie. “For liars,” he said finally. I had to stifle a laugh.

“Liars? How so?”

“You know,” Asher explained, “that’s what the cat said, as in, that’s what the liar said.”

The woman thought about it and chuckled. “I’ll have to use that one sometime.” Meanwhile, Dori was shooting daggers at Asher from the floor. I’m sure he didn’t like that expression one bit.

The woman ordered a strawberry cupcake and left us to discuss our tactics with the mayor. “We’ll go at lunch,” I said.

"Roger that, Chief," Asher saluted, already turning back to the register.

Dori clawed at my pant leg to get my attention. “This time, leave me here.”

“Gladly.”

With the morning rush slowing to a manageable trickle, I couldn't help but feel a tingle of anticipation. The suspect list was growing which meant more chances to prove Silas’ innocence.
